Top 14 – Notes from Toulouse – Toulon: A Capuozzo Angel hovers in the Toulouse sky, the Toulon rear are drowning

The residents largely won against at the end of the eighth day of the first division (57-5). In line with previous weeks, Ange Capuozzo and Juan Cruz Mallia were elusive and proved decisive. Opposite, the Toulon three-quarter line drank low in the face of the Toulon waves…

The tops

As often since the start of the season when he is aligned on the wing of the Toulouse attack, Ange Capuozzo stands out. To the point of becoming a starter for this red and black team when Ugo Mola decides to send his executives. Tonight, against the RCTthe Italian international once again demonstrated his excellent form at the moment. Precise in each of his interventions, he made the Toulon defenders dizzy with his four crossings. On a counter flash from Toulouse, it is he who hits the follow-up and finds himself a few seconds later on the other side of the meadow to push Gabin Villière into touch and therefore score a good touch for his team. His good run where he puts pressure on the Toulon defense allows Anthony Jelonch to flatten the bonus try.

His performance is obviously enhanced by his three attempts. On the first he takes advantage of the good shift created by Juan Cruz Mallia (see below) and can flatten quietly. The third is similar, but it is Dimitri Delibès who serves him well. The second is much more beautiful. Once again on the edge of the sidelines he uses his speed to sneak past the Toulon defenders and once again dive behind the line.

This opening position suits him so well… The Argentinian produced a top-notch performance against the RCT! Of course there are his two attempts. On the first, he especially takes advantage of the good work of his teammates to flatten out as an opportunist. On the second, his run is obviously magnificent, but it is above all the defense which is completely broken. This is only a submerged part of the iceberg, that is to say its evening level. Mallia also stood out with his many classy gestures, like this delicious 50-22 on a Toulouse turnover. It was he who obtained a good penalty on a clearance while his team were under pressure in their 22 meters. He started his second half in the best possible way: with a magnificent pass after contact, he freed up space for Ange Capuozzo's second try.

The flops

The full-back couldn't have started his encounter worse. After less than 30 seconds of play, Thomas Ramos recovered his candle but the Toulouse knocked his opponent off balance in the air. A bad approximation which cost him the fastest yellow card of the season in the division… Yet in sight this season in the absence of Melvyn Jaminetthe 22-year-old West Indian failed to get back on track after returning from the locker room. He is guilty of a direct hit (22nd) or a ball escaped from a tackle by François Cros. From a good attacking ball, the Varois went on to concede a 50-22… He was little visible offensively, like his friends on the three-quarter line of the RCT.

It is never easy to replace Baptiste Serin… The week before, against , the return of the French international had transformed the club into lily of the valley after a very poor performance from the Scot. This time, the former player, injured, was not there to replace the former Irishman. At his expense, a pass into space after having carried too much within the opponent's five meters (8th), a fumbled ruck exit leading to a ball returned to the opponent (13th) or a touch found directly (14th). His poor exit from camp led to Ange Capuozzo's second try (42nd). A good presence in defense is nevertheless worth noting (seven tackles attempted, one missed). Beyond these two elements mentioned, it is indeed this entire rearranged Toulon line which was in great difficulty on the pitch of the Toulouse Stadium.
