Was it a question of concentration? The greater willpower? In any case, the decision in the first Rhone derby since spring 2023 was made at the beginning of both halves. Sion appeared to be vulnerable defensively, Servette didn’t hesitate for long:

  • 5. Minute: Timothé Cognat takes over from Julian Von Moos after a fall and replaces Miroslav Stevanovic on the right wing. The advancing Enzo Crivelli uses his pass in the middle into the far corner to take the lead.
  • 50. Minute: Servette’s forechecking in the opponent’s half wins the ball. Stevanovic passes to Dereck Kutesa. This shoots from half-right from 15 meters. Reto Ziegler tries to block, but instead he deflects the ball slightly – 2-0.

For Crivelli, the goal was a special satisfaction. The 29-year-old Frenchman only had the joker role in the last two SL games. He thanked his return to the starting line-up with his third goal of the season.

For Kutesa it was already the 6th goal of the season. He is now the sole leader in the goalscoring rankings. Stevanovic, who is actually considered a super preparer, actually recorded his first two assists of this season.

After the 2-0, Servette did the bare minimum on offense without consequence to keep the ball as far away from his own box as possible. The 3-0 came late in a somewhat strange way:

  • 85. Minute: Stevanovic hits a free kick into the penalty area, two Servette shots are blocked by the Sion defense, but the shot from substitute Ondoua, who returned after a red card suspension, still finds its way into the net via the underside of the crossbar.

Sion “makes an effort”

Promoted Sion was not uncommitted in the game in front of 13,000 spectators (albeit without a few Ultras from both sides), but at no point did they seem able to give the game a different twist. The Valais’ attempts to finish were mostly harmless. The expression on President Christian Constantin’s face before the start of the second half spoke volumes.

Legend:

I’ve had better evenings

Sion President Christian Constantin.

A shot from Dejan Djokic (16th) and a volley from Joël Schmied after a corner (47th), which Crivelli defended just before the line, were the exceptions.

Thanks to the 3 points, the Geneva team moved up to second place for the time being, just one point behind leader FCZ. Sion remains bottom line. Incidentally, the last Rhone derby in May 2023 ended with a 5-0 win for Servette.
