The blues of Charente farmers

Anger is gaining ground among Charente farmers. While they wait payment of financial aid provided for by the common agricultural policy, they are concerned about the increasing number of administrative controls to impose standards, and the multiplication of procedures. All this, in a climate of poor harvests, because of the rain in spring and summer.
Dialogue is not always easy with the Departmental Directorate of Agriculture, so it was the head of the DDT agricultural service who came to see them yesterday. He visited five farms in the South-East of Charente. That of Eric GOICHON, for example: the GAEC des Collines, a large-scale cereal producer, in Salles-Lavalette, which complains of a regulation too finickywhile the weather has been catastrophic this year

Charente farmers regret the administrative hassles. The too frequent checks by agents of the departmental territorial management, the declarations for exemptions or various and varied authorizations, the steps to validate the “covers”, these inter-season crops which must regenerate the land. And the weather doesn’t add any good: the spring rains have degraded the quality of the plants; they are now attacked by insects, larvae which lay their eggs on corn leaves. The administration responds that it must carry out checks, that is its role. You must prove that you need help in the event of a technical or climatic hazard. But it is also necessary leave the door open for a little flexibility and dialogue with farmers. Systematically sending acknowledgments of receipt, even by email, would help calm things down a little and reassure farmers that their files will be taken into account.
