Gad Elmaleh has just tackled a surprising new project by buying the Parisian institution Chez Michou, located rue des Martyrs in Montmartre, as revealed by AFP. The commercial court chose Gad Elmaleh to buy the business. The transformist cabaret, founded by the famous and late Michou, closed its doors definitively in June 2023 after financial difficulties, followed by judicial liquidation in July. The 23 employees of the cabaret had to be fired.

Gad Elmaleh will transform it into a place of “comedy and humor”

However, Gad Elmaleh does not take over the brand Chez Michouwhich remains linked to the memory of its founder who died in 2020. Its objective is clear: to transform this historic place into a space dedicated to comedy and humor, while respecting the soul of the cabaret which made it famous. Gad Elmaleh’s communications department told AFP that the comedian’s project consists of creating a place where comedy and humor will be in the spotlight.

A place of comedy and humor, while keeping the soul of the place.

This decision has also delighted the family of the founder, especially his niece, who was delighted to see her uncle’s festive spirit continue in another form. The challenge for Gad Elmaleh will be to reinvent this place while respecting its heritage.

Michou’s niece reacts

From AFP, Catherine Catty-Jacquart, Michou’s niece, reacted to the news:

Gad Elmaleh will continue to bring to life the ’80 rue des Martyrs’ which has fallen into good hands as Michou would have liked. We would have been unfortunate if the place became anything other than a cabaret. It won’t be called ‘Chez Michou’ anymore, but Gad will make it a very beautiful place. It’s a very good thing to turn the page, by taking a turn.
