Will Storm Kirk hit ?

Should expect a storm this week? Meteorologists are carefully monitoring a phenomenon that should affect : Hurricane Kirk. This depression, formed in the Atlantic and which at the height of its force was classified as a category 4 hurricane, seems to be heading towards the north of France according to the map updated by the American National Hurricane Center (NHC). .

If this trajectory is confirmed, what should we expect? “This is going to be the first storm of the season,” announces meteorologist Stéven Tual. But Brittany should not be affected by the strong winds, which will instead affect Charente-Maritime, the region and the center of France, then the east. »

Little wind, but heavy rain

In Brittany, it will therefore be a classic gale in the afternoon of Wednesday October 9, 2024, with gusts of 80 to 90 km/h in Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine. But the region will not escape the rain!

“There will be very heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, torrential rain, especially in the south and east of Brittany. It should fall at the foot of the Armorican Massif and in -Atlantique more than 50 mm in less than 24 hours, which is close to records. This could cause some problems and cause flooding. »

“The equivalent of a month of precipitation”

Jérôme Dréano, meteorologist at Météo Bretagne completes: “It is not excluded that we will get closer to the equivalent of a month of precipitation between Wednesday noon and Thursday noon. » But he remains cautious about the forecasts: “We have to be careful because there remains uncertainty about the intensity and dynamism of the phenomenon. Depression can strengthen or, on the contrary, weaken. We will know more in 24 to 36 hours.”

If Kirk’s trajectory and its intensity are confirmed in the days to come, Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine must therefore prepare to take out the umbrellas and oilskins. Finistère and Côtes-d’Armor should be rather spared: “It will rain but it will remain more classic accumulations. »
