Nearly five years after the release of its first opus, Netflix is back in force this first weekend of October with the release of Platform 2. This second part comes after the resounding success of the first, still in fifth place among the most viewed non-English films in Netflix history. After nearly 83 million households became passionate about the revolt of Goreng (Ivan Massagué), determined to save a young girl, it is the turn of Perempuan (Milena Smit) to be admitted to the fictional prison on 333 levels vertical. As in the first part, every day, a platform descends to distribute food to each level but the rules have changed: each captive must only eat the dish he requested when admitted to the prison. Any offense is violently punished by the henchmen of the “Prophet”. She and Zamiatin (Hovik Keuchkerian from Theft of money) will soon pay the price… Warning, spoilers guaranteed.
The platform 2: be careful, this film is not a sequel to the first part on Netflix…
Only the title of the film is intended to mislead viewers. By titling the feature film Platform 2we immediately assume that this novelty is a continuation of the first, which also left many questions unanswered. But the end of the film makes it very clear thatit’s a prequel : in fact, in one of the last scenes, we see Goreng descending to the bottom of the pit again. He is greeted by Perempuan. We then understand that Goreng is Perempuan’s boyfriend and therefore the father of the little boy she killed by accident. As it is she who welcomes him, it becomes clear that the events of Platform 2 actually took place before those of the 1st.
Platform 2 : Are Perempuan and Goreng dead in the Netflix movie?
One of the big questions that arises is understanding the meaning of the bottom of the pit, the one below level 333. When the first film was released, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia spoke with our British colleagues. digital spy : “For me, this last level does not exist. Goreng died before he reached it, and this is just his interpretation of what he thought he should do.» A statement which overlaps with the end of the second film where Perempuan, when she goes down with the little boy, is welcomed favorably by the many inhabitants of this sub-level. Among them, we can see in particular the face of Zamiatin and the other comrades, who died earlier in the film. Which therefore confirms that The woman is dead during this scene and that she could not survive the violent blow she received to the head while hitting herself to save the child.
Platform 2 : what is this painting with a dog that Perempuan is desperately looking for?
When Perempuan tries to escape the pit, she must go searching.of a dog“. The viewer remains in the dark for a long time as to the meaning of this dog. It is actually a painting. The work was not invented for the purposes of the film but is a real painting by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, belonging to his series of works. Black paints.
Platform 2 : what do the scenes with the children mean?
This is the biggest mystery left in the film. Several scenes involve children: those interspersed in the main story first, where we discover that many children live at the bottom of the abyss. One of them is chosen at the end of the film to be placed on level 333. It is him that Perempuan tries to save and who goes back up without her at the end. We thus understand that the managers of the pit regularly place children in the levels of the prison. Information that could confirm that the prison is in fact a sort of giant social experiment where we try to observe human and individual reactions to extreme situations.. The children would therefore be the ultimate moral test to know whether the prisoners of the pit are capable of repentance by sacrificing themselves in the face of the ultimate incarnation of innocence. The scene where we successively see people descending to the bottom of the pit on the platform, accompanied by children, would therefore show all those who managed to repent.
Platform 2 : does the ending mean that a film Platform 3 is planned?
While we thought that Platform 2 would give us many more answers about the origins of the pit, many questions remain unanswered, paving the way for an additional film. Questioned by the Spanish media Cocinillas, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia commented on this possibility: “It’s not up to me or Netflix, it’s up to how The Platform 2 is received. If the film works, we will have many possibilities to imagine a third: we will have to answer questions like who, where, when and above all why or for what purpose the pit and the platform were created. We have some great ideas to close the loop and answer all the questions that are currently being asked.»
