Israel launched strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on Sunday after Houthi militants fired missiles into Israel over the past two days, opening a new front in the region’s conflict.

The Israeli army announced in a statement that dozens of aircraft, including fighter jets, attacked power plants and a site at the ports of Ras Issa and Hodeidah.

The strikes caused power cuts in most areas of the port city of Hodeidah, residents said.

“Over the past year, the Houthis have operated under the direction and financing of Iran, and in cooperation with Iraqi militias, to attack the State of Israel, undermine regional stability, and disrupt international freedom of navigation,” the Israeli army announced in its press release.

The Houthi movement mourned earlier this weekend for Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, its ally in the Iran-backed alliance against Israel, killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon.
