Arthur Fils, 20th player in the world, escaped the trap set by the Finn Otto Virtanen to qualify this Sunday for the 2nd round of the Australian Open.
On the Margaret Court Arena, Arthur Fils (seeded n°20) won 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-4 against the Finn Otto Virtanen (92nd) who he faced for the first time on the ATP circuit but whom he had already beaten in 2023 on the Challenger circuit (2nd level of world tennis).
The match started off difficult for the French n°2, broken by Virtanen at 4-4 in the second set after he had already conceded the first.
But Fils immediately managed to break the break (5-5), before pocketing the second set in the tie-break and definitively gaining the upper hand over his opponent.
In the next round, Son, who was eliminated in the 2nd round of the Australian Open in 2024, will face his compatriot Quentin Halys (71st) or the Australian Adaw Walton (91st).
