ATP Stockholm: Stan Wawrinka stopped by Tommy Paul in the semi-finals

Tommy Paul put an end to Stan Wawrinka’s great run. The American, 13th in the world, beat the 39-year-old Swiss (6-3, 6-2) on Saturday in the semi-finals of the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm. Wawrinka, former world No.3 and now 217th, reached the last four by beating Russian Andrey Rublev (7th) on Friday. His first success against a member of the Top 10 in over a year.

This qualification, at 39 years old, made the three-time Grand Slam winner the third oldest semi-finalist in an ATP tournament since 1990. But his adventure ended against Tommy Paul, winner in Stockholm in 2021. Breaké and led 4-2 by the 27-year-old American in the first set, Wawrinka had two opportunities to break, but was unable to make them happen. In the second set, the American took the Swiss’s serve from the start to go it alone and conclude 6-2.

Paul will face Grigor Dimitrov (10th) in the final on Sunday. The Bulgarian defeated the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (37th) after a 2h25 battle (2-6, 7-5, 6-4). Dimitrov, who won his first ATP Tour title in Stockholm in 2013, is the active player who has won the most matches at this tournament (19).
