Despondent in his chair, Alexander Zverev puts his head in his hands. He'll still have to wait before tearing off that damn label. “best player in the world without a Grand Slam title” which sticks to him, to plagiarize John McEnroe. As at the US Open in 2020 and Roland-Garros in 2024, the 27-year-old German must be content with the finalist's plateau at the Australian Open, failing a third time in his quest for the Holy Grail.

Sunday January 26, the world number two came up against number one, Jannik Sinner, in a one-sided final despite the casting (6-3, 7-6 [7-4]6-3). The unfortunate finalist still managed to crack a smile during the speeches on the Rod Laver Arena. “It annoys me to be next to this trophy and not be able to touch it,” quipped the tall loser (1.98 m) before turning to the Italian: “I was hoping to be more competitive today but you were too good. »

To become the most successful Grand Slam player on the other side of the Alps (men and women combined), the 23-year-old right-hander went it alone on Sunday, not once worried about his throws. Despite his repeated attacks, his runner-up in the ranking was powerless to overtake him.
