Authoritatively qualified for the round of 16 of the Australian Open after his victory against the American Marcos Giron (6−3, 6–4, 6–2), Jannik Sinner, as usual, did not is not very talkative in the post-match press conference.
Asked about the secrets of longevity with the example of Gaël Monfils, the world number 1 first kicked in before giving his opinion on the subject. Excerpts.
Q. As a top athlete, you have to work a lot physically. You saw Gaël (Monfils) reach the round of 16. What is his secret and what is your secret to staying so physically strong over a long career that can span 20 years? Do you think you will be as fit as Gael at 38?
JANNIK SINNER: That's a question I can't answer. I don't know. Of course, you have to work a lot, especially when you are young, to achieve longevity. Things have to be prevented. You also have to work very intelligently. I didn't use a lot of weight when I was a junior or younger than I am now. I was trying to avoid certain injuries. You have to choose the right tournaments, when to play and when not to play. There are a lot of things that come together. We saw it today with Gaël, with Novak (Djokovic), with a lot of incredible players who are still in great shape despite their age. It also gives us a different point of view, right? Of course, it's important to win now, but it's also important to keep your career and your body in good shape over time.
