While he has too often been weighed down by injuries in recent years, Kei Nishikori continues to fight like a lion on the court, at 35, driven by his love of the game.

Opposed to the dangerous Thiago Monteiro, out of qualifying, the Japanese was led two sets to nothing before winning in five sets: 4–6, 6–7(4), 7–5, 6–2, 6–3 . He has now won 81.8% of his matches in five sets!

A phenomenal statistic proposed by Jeu, Set et Maths: among players who have played at least 20 matches in five sets, only legend Bjorn Borg can boast of having a better winning percentage.

At a press conference, a journalist asked Nishikori how he keeps this energy during these marathons.

“I eat a lot of sushi”replied the 2014 US Open finalist, smiling.

In the second round, the current 74^e world will face the winner of the match between Tommy Paul (12^e) et Christopher O’Connell (64^e).
