By overturning a match that seemed unwinnable when he was trailing 5–1 in the second set after losing the first, all with five match points to save, this Sunday against Tabilo in the second round of the Shanghai Masters 1000, Tommy Paul shocked a lot of people.
Starting with her compatriot, Frances Tiafoe, who spoke about her crazy comeback at a press conference after qualifying for the 3e tour.
“Braveheart (named after the film directed by Mel Gibson, editor’s note). I texted him this morning, Braveheart, man. I saw, I watched, he lost the first set, he wasn’t playing very well, he was a little flat. Then I saw he got broken at the start of the second set, and I kind of stopped watching, so I watched Netflix. I looked at the score again, he was down 5–2, I said to myself, well, it’s over for him. I fell asleep. I wake up, I doze off, I wake up, I see 6–6 in the tie‐break, so I put the match back on my phone. He wins the tie‐break and I didn’t know he had five match points against him until he told me today (Monday). It’s an incredible effort. These victories go a long way and I hope he uses them to continue. I don’t know who he’ll play next, but it was important last night (Sunday). »
