As the RTX 5000 prepares to officially arrive at the end of January, some RTX 3000 owners may be tempted to change GPUs. However, waiting a bit might be wise. Indeed, technology exclusive to the RTX 4000 could finally land on older generation cards. Not enough to achieve the performance of new products, but largely enough to improve the experience.
As you may know, Nvidia took advantage of CES 2025 in Las Vegas to present its new generation of GPUs: the famous RTX 5000. Without going into technical details, the green team promises increases performance between 15 and 20% compared to RTX 4000, in addition to the integration of DLSS 4.0.
50 series graphics cards will be officially available next January 30at prices ranging between 649 € et 2349 € depending on the version. In fact, you may be patiently waiting for their launch to change your good “old” RTX 3000. However, this statement from an Nvidia executive could change your mind.
Recently, renowned experts from Digital Foundry were able to speak with Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning research at Nvidia. During this exchange, the executive explains that he and his teams are looking for a way to exploit 100% the capabilities of older generation GPUsand in particular the RTX 3000.
Frame Generation soon on the RTX 3000?
More precisely, the engineer would like to ensure that the 30 series can exploit DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation technology. To quickly summarize the principle, Frame Generation uses AI to generate entirely new images between two classic 3D images, which provides significant performance gains. Only and until further notice, Frame Generation remains the prerogative of the RTX 4000. Indeed, this technology is based on the optical flow accelerator integrated into the Ada Lovelace architecture of the 40 series.
However, we should not expect anything equivalent to what will be done on the RTX 5000, far from it. Indeed, even if the AI power is present, the absence of Optical Flow Acceleration (which analyzes the image and reduces artifacts) as well as Flip Metering which makes the transition between real and generated images more “smooth” will leave still the RTX 3000 far behind the 5000.
In summary, your RTX 3000s could benefit from a little boost in the future and users should not be “forced” to upgrade to the 5000 series right away. However, you should not expect to reach the performances of the latter.
