A new TV box for the Freebox Ultra? The project is not secret but it has progressed well recently, to the point of having a first glimpse of the technical sheet.
Free is reportedly working to launch a new TV box for the Freebox Ultra. Scheduled for marketing during the year, it is beginning to reveal its secrets. At least this is the discovery of an active member of the Free community, Tino-X83 who shared his discovery on a benchmark database. It is obviously too early to have an overview of the design and technical capabilities of this box which bears the name, undoubtedly provisional, of “Super Player”. However, according to the data recorded on Geekbench, it is possible to get an idea of its hardware.
Thus, the provisional technical sheet would include for the first time a 64-bit ARM processor, a 5-core 2.02 GHz ARMv8 version equipped with 4 GB of RAM. For the moment, this box runs Android 14. Is this the definitive technical sheet for Free’s next TV box? The hypothesis seems likely, at least it fits with the operator’s latest statements about this project. Indeed, last fall, Free admitted to working on a new box, but was doubtful about what it should include in terms of software and components to really change the situation compared to the competition.
Freebox Super Player : super performances ?
It is certain that an ARM processor would open up new possibilities for a TV box, particularly because of its supposed power. The choice of Android, rather than a home interface, would also go in the direction of a powerful and compatible accessory, among other things with many games. Moreover, this would not be the first time that Free would rely on Android to manage the interface of one of its boxes, it did so in 2020 with the Free 4K Player and initiated it in 2015 with its Freebox Mini 4K.
If the Freebox Super Player project moves forward, there obviously remain two major unknowns, the release date and the price of this new accessory. We can bet that the answers to these two questions will arrive in the coming months.
