Traveling to Mars. A dream for some, a project that has been in the works for many years for others. This is particularly the case of Christophe Lasseuroriginally from L’Aigle (Orne), responsible for the program MELISSA (Micro-ecological life support system alternative) pour the European Space Agency (ESA). Work which aims to ensure the independent life of astronauts, over very long periods of time.
A journey to 2050
The extraordinary career of this Ornais native, who today occupies a major function in the project of traveling to Mars, by focusing on the recycling of waste, to live a long journey into space as part of the future manned expedition which will go to Mars in a few decades (2050).
Thinking about the future recycling waste, water, oxygen, food during space travel to the moon or even to the planet Mars, this is the new object of conquest of the ESA (European Space Agency) on which it is working Christopher.
For trips around the earth, 500 km away, we know how to manage deliveries and stewardship of rockets. On the other hand, we seek to resolve the problems of missions lasting more than 6 months, including those to come on Mars.
Research and development manager in the field « support-vie »astronaut trainer including Thomas Pesquet, Christophe Lasseur participates in the creation of the MéLiSSA project, “an adventure to find how to keep humans in space by recycling CO2, gray water resulting from washing, but also urine, the last point on which we are focusing our efforts. »
