powerful smartphones at an affordable price

Far from CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Poco is renewing its ranges with the arrival of the X7 series to succeed the X6 of 2024. The young independent brand born from Xiaomi does not change its philosophy and continues to target users looking for a very good performance-price ratio. Young gamers and mobile days are among the targets of the new Poco X7 and Poco X7 Pro.

Poco X7 Pro: performance worthy of a flagship?

The best equipped of the two is the Poco X7 Pro which benefits from a fairly classic design, with the traditional Poco colors (yellow, green and black). IP68 certified, it has Corning Gorilla Glass 7i to protect its screen. The smartphone is technically challenging with the integration of the Dimensity 8400-Ultra chip engraved in 4 nm. Freshly announced by MediaTek, it has an original CPU part with only Cortex-A725 cores in a format (1+3+4).

The main Cortex-A725 core clocked at 3.25 GHz promises good performance for a SoC oriented towards the mid-range (or upper mid-range). It comes with three A725 cores at 3.0 GHz and four more A725 cores at 2.1 GHz. An “All-Big-Core” design which should help the device to offer good multitasking performance while the graphics part is entrusted to the Mali-G720 MC7. Compared to the previous generation (Dimensity 8300), Poco mentions an energy efficiency gain of 54% for the processor (CPU) and 70% for the GPU (graphics part). As a bonus, artificial intelligence performance jumps 50% compared to the old chip.

Technologies to take advantage of chip performance

It’s well known that power is nothing without control and the brand relies on several technologies to guarantee the best performance. The Poco X7 Pro features WildBoost Optimization 3.0 technology which uses an internal algorithm to ensure a stable frame rate, optimized connection, more immersive sound effects and better graphics. As an example, the firm mentions “particularly visible” improvements in demanding games such as Genshin Impact, playable up to 1.5K thanks to AI super resolution (upscaling).

Additionally, a revamped user interface is available for gamers and LiquidCool 4.0 technology is there to maintain the temperature even during heavy use. In detail, we find a cooling area of 5000 mm and a POCO 3D IceLoop system which separates vapor and liquid. Finally, Poco mentions a specially designed 3D structure around the CPU that helps dissipate heat more efficiently. It leads to an efficiency three times higher than that of the traditional steam chamber, assures the manufacturer.

A little AI to support the photo part

Gaming and power are the priorities of the Poco X7 Pro and the phone adds a solid technical sheet. It adds 8 to 12 GB of RAM, as well as 256 to 512 GB of storage in UFS 4.0. The display is entrusted to a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen displaying Full HD+ (2,712 x 1,220 pixels), with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. The photo part includes a dual sensor with a main module of 50 Mpx (f/1.5, 1/195 inch, OIS, 26 mm equivalent) and an ultra wide-angle of 8 Mpx (f/2.2, 1/ 4.0 inch, 15mm equivalent). A 20 Mpx (f/2.2) selfie camera completes the photo section and the X7 Pro can film up to 4K at 60 fps with its rear cameras.

To enrich the experience, Poco uses AI and offers functions like AI Erase Pro (magic eraser) to remove unwanted elements from an image. An AI Image Expansion feature helps recover poorly composed images, while AI Film simplifies the creation of short videos.

Finally, Poco integrates a 6,000 mAh battery compatible with 90 W charging. 5G compatible, the Poco X7 Pro also supports Wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4. It runs Android 15 with the HyperOS 2.0 overlay and benefits from some AI functions to improve productivity and creativity (AI Interpreter, AI Notes, AI Recorder, etc.). Gemini services are also accessible.

Poco X7: less performance, a lower price

Behind a slightly different design with its circular photo block on the back, the Poco X7 offers a less ambitious technical sheet. It still retains the 6.67-inch AMOLED screen (with brightness up to 3,000 nits) and IP68 certification. Its screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass. Under the hood, it has a less powerful chip still from MediaTek: the Dimensity 7300-Ultra. At Journal du Geek, we have already crossed paths with the Dimensity 7300 in the Motorola Edge 50 Neo and CMF Phone 1. We can expect fairly similar performance, with the addition of 8 to 12 GB of RAM and 256 to 512 GB of storage in the Poco X7.

This smartphone has the same main modules (50 Mpx Sony IMX882 with OIS) and ultra wide-angle (8 Mpx). It adds a 2MP macro lens (f/2.4), but loses the AI-driven photo features. Finally, the Poco X7 has a 5,110 mAh battery, compatible with 45 W charging.
