Shure’s new MV7i microphone for podcasting is a 2-channel audio interface with built-in DSP effects

Shure knows how to make a good (and, more importantly, popular) product, so it’s no surprise that its new microphone has the makings of a favorite. Among the plethora of desktop USB mics on the market today, the MV7i, which was just launched at CES 2025, is somewhat unique.

This is a micro USB that can act as a dual-input audio interface dual-input audio interface The MV7i is a dual-input audio interface, which has a built-in DSP for audio processing. This not only reduces the number of devices an aspiring creator needs to purchase, but also significantly simplifies and declutters their workflow.

While one audio channel comes from the MV7i’s capsule, the second comes from an XLR/TRS combo jack where you can plug in a dynamic or condenser mic, or an instrument such as a guitar or digital piano. A USB-C connector lets you take your audio to your computer, smartphone, or tablet. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack for directly monitoring either input source. Overall, this is a great setup for a podcast interview or for a singer-songwriter (or musical duo).

The onboard DSP is very efficient in improving your sound. Auto Level mode dynamically adjusts mic gain based on source level and proximity, and even room acoustics, to ensure audio isn’t distorted or inaudible. Additionally, Shure’s exclusive SmartGate™ system detects when a speaker stops speaking and significantly reduces the level. This helps eliminate background noise and crosstalk between channels, for example in an interview where only one person is speaking at a time.

The Real-Time Denoiser, as its name suggests, reduces ambient noise, while the Digital Popper Stopper reduces plosives in vocals – a task that otherwise requires a plosive filter accessory. Finally, three types of reverb are available (Plate, Hall, Studio) with adjustable intensity.

As for the interface, you get a customizable color LED touchscreen (the same one that debuted on the Shure MV7+), which allows you to mute each channel with a single touch and which serves as a live indicator for individual audio levels. Shure’s MOTIV Mix app for computer and mobile allows you to make further adjustments, such as channel configuration (Mixdown, Multi-Track or Stereo), DSP effects and LED colors.

All of these features don’t come cheap, however. The Shure MV7i retails for $350 and is available now on Amazon. If you like the built-in DSP features and LED touch strip, but aren’t really looking for a two-channel interface, the Shure MV7+, priced at $275, should suit you while saving you a few bucks.
