How AI helps with the resale of gifts on Leboncoin

Leboncoin continues its transformation. Its platform, widely acclaimed by the French and recognized as the leading French e-commerce site with 302.3 million monthly visits on average in the third quarter of 2024, is also adopting generative AI.

Determined to stand out – and above all not to miss the mark of the end-of-year holidays – Leboncoin is launching a salvo of improvements on its site, including the addition of new services for selling and buying, new delivery partners, secure exchanges and simplified connection.

“We know that the holiday period is crucial for e-retailers, and even more so for Leboncoin when we see the scale of second-hand shopping for Christmas. Our record figures from the end of October demonstrate this moreover every yearcomments its manager, Antoine Jouteau. To increasingly meet the needs of our consumers, our technical teams – which represent more than 600 employees out of 1,500 – develop features every day, in particular using AI.”

AI to facilitate ad creation and search

Leboncoin has notably worked on image search in all of its applications. A visual recognition functionality has therefore been integrated, allowing users to load a photo into the application's search function, an image analyzed in order to offer similar advertisements and thus help the user in their search. Based on AI, the service is available to everyone on all consumer goods (fashion, home & garden, family, leisure) and on vehicles.

At the same time, users can rely on AI to easily and quickly generate the description of their ad, based on a photo and a title. It can thus complete the following sections: the characteristics of the property in a detailed text, the price considered relevant based on the price of similar advertisements, the recommended delivery methods and weights. Already available for the key end-of-year categories, namely Games and Toys, Video Games, as well as Household Appliances, it will open to other categories from the start of 2025.

Finally, thanks to this technology, Leboncoin offers to personalize the homepage of its users. “Each user now has their own, tailor-made, with content recommendations based on their browsing, the list of their favorites with direct access or the last ads seen. Easier to decide before the products are sold”assures the company.

Security is not left out


“With nearly one in two French people connecting to Leboncoin every month,” the company wants to keep ease of use while strengthening security. In particular, the date of last connection is added to the user profile in order to check their recent activity.

This information is in addition to that on the response rate of an account, another indicator of the activity and responsiveness of a user, as well as the verification of the telephone number, the rating of the profile, the age of the account, or even alert messages in the conversation.

Finally, like many e-commerce platforms, Leboncoin offers to register or connect to the site via their Google account, from the application or the web version.
