At 28, Jacob Lofland stole the show from Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in several scenes of “Joker: Folie à Deux”, released in October 2024. He now plays the young hero in the series “Landman”, available on Canal+ .
How were you chosen to star in this new series from Taylor Sheridan, the creator of “Yellowstone”?
I auditioned for two months before landing the role of Cooper. I’m a fan of Taylor Sheridan’s series like “Yellowstone” and I really wanted to work with Billy Bob Thornton who plays my father in “Landman”. The action takes place in Texas in regions where people seek to make their fortune by discovering new oil deposits. In his youth, my father worked in these places and even though it was before I was born, I often heard stories about these places where you can make a fortune, but also quickly lose your life by accident.
Did your father give you any advice before filming?
Absolutely, we discussed it at length. It was important for me to share these moments which allowed us to be together often. Unfortunately, he passed away last summer and he never had the opportunity to see his son in an episode. I was hired for “Landman” in 2023, but the actors’ and writers’ strike paralyzed all productions. So there was a long waiting period before starting filming.
How did you create your bond with Billy Bob Thornton who plays your father and the boss of the oil operations?
We both come from the US state of Arkansas, which is not as famous for its oil wells as Texas, but this industry exists there too. Our bond was created in a few minutes, sharing memories of our childhood, because we grew up in these places in the middle of large wild spaces where we eat deer meat and hunt squirrels.
What do you like about your character?
Cooper has no idea how to operate in this oil business. I like this because the viewers sort of follow the plot through him. We thus discover the work carried out by these people who forge wells in West Texas in search of black gold.
Is it difficult to cope with your growing popularity after your role in “Joker: Folie à Deux”?
I don’t really feel any pressure, because I’m still incognito in the crowd. I always strive to change a little physically for each new role, because I think it’s important if I want to be credible from one shoot to the next. But I hope that “Landman” will last several years and I will be delighted to meet fans of our series to discuss our episodes.
