Although they remain polluting, hybrid cars emit less CO2 than vehicles equipped with combustion engines, as they consume less fuel. According to Renault, the carbon dioxide emissions of a 100% plug-in hybrid model are 75% lower than those of a thermal vehicle. For facilitate the transition to this type of enginehelp motorists save fuel and participate in the fight against global warming, Solution F has developed the Twin-E. This innovative kit allows you to quickly transform a classic gasoline car into a hybrid.
An easy to install kit
To transform a thermal car into a hybrid using Twin-E, you have to follow a few relatively simple steps. First, a 48 V electric motor is installed next to the vehicle’s original internal combustion engine and its gearbox is replaced by a planetary gear set. After these two steps, a rechargeable battery is installed at the floor of its trunk. According to Solution F, the transformation work can be completed in less than a day on the majority of light urban and utility vehicles. Eric PlanchaisGCK’s program director, declared that the kit was first designed for the engines of Renault 1.5 cars. It should also be adapted to products from the Stellantis group, notably those from Peugeot and Citroën.
Correct autonomy and reduced fuel consumption
According to Solution F, a gasoline car equipped with the Twin-E kit can cover a distance of 70 km in 100% electric mode, before switching to thermal mode. In terms of fuel consumption, tests carried out at UTAC made it possible to estimate it at 1.4 l/100 km, i.e. CO2 emissions of around 39 g/km. This is significantly lower than vehicles running solely on gasoline which can consume around 5.9 l/100 km and emit 139 g of carbon dioxide every kilometer. It should be noted that cars transformed by the kit from the Green Corp subsidiary Konnection should be able to circulate in all urban areas, including those with low emissions (ZFE).
More or less affordable prices
The Twin-E is not currently available yet, but it dshould be marketed from mid-2025. Concerning its price, the GCK program director announced that to access a kit, it would be necessary to budget approximately €8,500 or €4,000, if the transformation is subsidized by the State. Certainly, the installation of the Twin-E constitutes a significant investment for motorists. However, it is 3 times cheaper than purchasing a new electric vehicle and 2 times cheaper than a 100% electric retrofit, according to the company.
For information, despite the many advantages of the kit, some specialists are not convinced by this solution proposed by Solution F. In fact, the president of Mobilans declared that the cost of a redevelopment is generally higher than that of a car which has reached the end of its lifespan, namely 20 years. For his part, Cléa MartinetRenault’s director of sustainable development, believes that changing an engine does not effectively renovate a car.
