We've been dreaming of it for years, and that's it, Microsoft is finally tackling a major transformation of Windows by announcing its Windows Resiliency Initiative. This is a very ambitious project that will radically change the security of your favorite operating system and not just with a few patches here and there, no, no, I'm talking to you about a real overhaul of the security of OuinOuin which will arrive in 2025.
So why is Microsoft embarking on this major project? Well, imagine that last summer, a little, not very funny incident disrupted the peace of mind of millions of users: a shaky update of CrowdStrike has transformed business PCs into stunning digital clipboards. The bill? A staggering $54 billion in downtime. Enough to make the Redmond teams think seriously!
In short, this new version of Windows will introduce 3 fundamental changes:
Firstly, the self-defensive core !
Gone are the days when any program could do whatever it wanted in the bowels of your system! The new Windows kernel will be like a particularly strict nightclub bouncer: it will scrupulously check the identifiers of each application before letting it enter the VIP zone.
Secondly, the resilient drivers !
Microsoft understands that drivers are often the weak link in the chain. And with this new approach, pilots will have to respect much stricter safety standards. For third-party publishers who develop security solutions, Microsoft offers them a new platform called Windows Resilient Security Platformallowing them to effectively protect systems without direct access to the kernel.
Third, a system of quick recovery !
When your PC crashes, you can get it back up and running in record time.
Microsoft also has other major innovations planned such as:
- And intelligent app control using AI to validate trustworthy programs. This is a new feature called “robust app control” which will automatically block malicious applications and malware distributed via social engineering.
- A enhanced identity protection to counter phishing because faced with 600 million daily attacks based 99% on passwords, Microsoft is banking on Windows Hello and passwords. New support for WebAuthn APIs will even allow third-party password managers to natively integrate with Windows Hello.
- A redesigned privilege management with “admin protection”. This feature will limit user privileges by default while allowing them to make necessary system changes after authentication via Windows Hello. Enough to drastically reduce ransomware attacks, 93% of which currently exploit excessive privileges.
For developers, Microsoft is also making a gradual transition from C++ to Rust for its system code, thus prioritizing security and modernity.
This TOP SECURITY program will be available in preview for Windows Insiders from July 2025just before Windows 10 support ends in October. For the 61% of global users still on Windows 10 (lol), this will be the ideal opportunity to switch to a more secure Windows. (YOU WILL END UP MIGRATE, WHATEVER IT COSTS!!! ahahaha)
Microsoft also organized a summit with the main security players, including ESET, CrowdStrike and CISA, to jointly define best practices. CrowdStrike particularly welcomed this initiative which “builds resilience for our shared customers”.
This will allow ordinary users like us to benefit from a more stable and secure system. IT professionals will have more robust protection tools, and developers will benefit from a cleaner environment for their applications.
Looking forward to seeing this!
