You were probably waiting for it and it’s happening. You will soon be able to put an end to endless audios, those that could have been summarized in two lines.
WhatsApp announced this Thursday on its blog a new option for transcribing audio messages:
“Transcripts will be rolled out globally over the coming weeks”
We can therefore say goodbye to all these useless and time-consuming audios.
The principle is simple, by activating the new option, the “transcriptions are generated on your device”. According to WhatsApp, the confidentiality of your exchanges will be guaranteed, since it will be your phone which will be directly responsible for converting the voice message into text.
Audio transcription in four languages
Unfortunately, at first, this new option will only support four languages on Android: English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.
On iOS (Apple) devices, however, French would be directly available, as well as around twenty other languages.
How to enable transcription on WhatsApp
On Android and iPhone you must:
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Tap Discussions.
- Enable or disable Voicemail Transcriptions.
- When enabling Voicemail Transcriptions, select your Transcription Language.
Transcription deployment
Transcripts will be rolling out globally over the coming weeks, in a few languages to start.
How to transcribe a audio
WhatsApp warns up front: “Voice message transcriptions may be inaccurate.” However, here’s how to go about it:
- Make sure voicemail transcriptions on your device are enabled.
- Touch and hold a voice message, then tap Transcribe.
- Tap the ⬇️ sign in the voice message to view the rest of the transcription.
According to the WhatsApp blog, it may take “some time” to transcribe the voice message. If you see the “Transcription not available” error message, WhatsApp gives these tips:
- “Your transcription language setting does not match that of the voice message.”
- “Some words are not recognized, perhaps because of background noise.”
- “Voice message language is not supported.”
