Small, but mighty

On November 18, Geoff Keighley finally revealed the nominees for the next Game Awards ceremony, which is to be held on December 12. In the premier category, namely that of the game of the year, we find the big hits of 2024: Astro Bot, Black Myth : Wukong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Elden Ring : Shadow of the Erdtree (thanks to the new rules of the ceremony)… but also a certain Balatroa small independent game with a devilishly effective concept created by a single developer which has caused a lot of buzz since its release last February. And if it is difficult to imagine the software winning the supreme title, it is nevertheless more than likely that Balatro will manage to do well next month.

Five prizes to win

Despite its status as a “small” independent game, Balatro has all the cards in hand to shine at the Game Awards. The critical – and commercial – success of the game is undeniable and, if not the favorite for the GOTY title, Balatro will certainly win a prize in the four other categories for which it is nominated: best production, best independent game, best first game indie and best mobile game. While waiting for the ceremony on December 12, Balatro is already shining. The title has just won the award for best independent game and the critics' choice award at the Golden Joysticks which took place on December 21. The ball is on, and Balatro is ready to dance.
