Google Maps is significantly changing the way its users’ navigation data is saved and has announced a date from which it will no longer be possible to change the new settings.
Google Maps recently announced an important change regarding the “Your journeys” section, and more specifically the way in which its users’ navigation data is saved. Previously, browsing data was saved in the cloud. Users could thus access their journey history via their Google account and therefore from any device.
But from now on, the browsing history will be saved locally, that is to say on a specific device. In addition, browsing data will be permanently deleted after 3 months (it is possible to define a deletion period of 3, 18 or 36 months).
Google Maps has now announced a fateful date: you have until May 18, 2025 to adjust the backup settings in the “Your journeys” section. After this date, Google Maps will apply the default settings (deletion after 3 months), and will therefore delete a significant part of your browsing history.
To avoid any inconvenience, open Google Maps on your smartphone and click on your profile photo located at the top right of the screen. Then, simply access the “Your journeys” section and choose an option: “Keep until manually deleted” or “Automatic deletion after: 3, 18 or 36 months”.
Note that Google Maps explains everything in detail in a blog postwhile Windows warning you of these changes appear automatically when you open Google Maps. So take the necessary measures before May 18, 2025. After that, it will be too late.
