China wants to limit the time teenagers spend on their smartphones to one hour

Hard, hard, being a connected child… At least in China: after having imposed screen time limits on the Internet and video games on its young nationals, the Chinese Cyberspace Administration (CAC) is considering making the same thing for smartphones, reports BFMTV.

The internet regulator wants to introduce a “minor mode” on phones, which would force those under 16 to only be able to use their device for one hour per day (and double that for 16-18 year olds)!

“Minor mode” will also send a notification inviting you to rest after 30 minutes of continuous use. And it will prohibit minors from launching applications between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. if their parents do not object.

BFMTV specifies that it must also include a “filter” ensuring that only suitable content is offered to young Chinese. But for obvious security reasons, they will always have access to “basic” communication services (messages, calls).

But don't panic: Chinese “minor mode” should not be mandatory, according to BFMTV. It will in fact be up to parents, via an anti-circumvention function, to activate it – or not – on their children's smartphones.
