British operator uses AI ‘granny’ to keep scammers busy

Since last week, the British operator O2 has deployed a bot using AI to answer calls from fraudsters and keep them busy as long as possible.

Daisy is a British granny who loves to talk about her knitting skills and her family, but when she shares banking information, she sometimes makes mistakes. This means that the scammers who call her sometimes stay on the line with her for a long time, and this is exactly what O2 is trying to achieve. On Daisy’s initiative, we find O2 and YouTuber Jim Browning, whose channel focuses on deceptive and misleading telephone scammers. According to O2, Daisy managed to keep some fraudsters busy for forty minutes. But this is useful work, because the more time a scammer spends with a chatbot, the less time they have left to scam real people.

O2 is not yet revealing many technical details about the bot, which involves several AI models. This is how there is a model to note the scammer’s words, while a response to this text is generated using another model. This response is then converted into Daisy’s artificial voice. It took several weeks to train the AI grandmother.

Daisy is introduced during International Fraud Awareness Week, which is currently taking place. The telecom operator would like to point out here that the person you speak to on the phone is not always who they say they are.
