Recently added to PlayStation Plus, this first-person action horror game is one of the last Bethesda games to be released on PlayStation 5 before Microsoft’s takeover. Rated 16/20, this atypical experience will please PS+ subscribers who love Japanese folklore.

Among the bad news for the year 2024, the closure of the Tango Gameswork studio was a blow to players. If we knew it for The Evil Within, the Japanese studio especially shone in 2023 with the surprise release of Hi-Fi Rush which was one of the best new releases of the year. And yet, despite these qualities, this did not prevent its closure by Microsoftthe studio owned by Bethesda itself belonging to the Redmond firm. In all this, there was a fourth game developed by Tango Gameswork which was initially presented as a PS5 exclusive before the takeover by Xbox. And the good news is that it is now available in PlayStation Plus.

A PS5 exclusive like no other

As its name suggests, Ghostwire Tokyo takes place in the heart of the Japanese capital and brings us face to face with occult forces while the city is completely emptied of its inhabitants. In this first-person action game, you have an arsenal of elemental skills and other spells to discover the truth about this mass disappearance and save Tokyo, no less. From its first images, the Tango Gameworks title had many players salivating with its mix of modern setting and Japanese horror folklore. In addition, the title is a kind of FPS, but with magic and in an open world which offers a new approach to the genre. So many arguments that made the game one of the expectations of the console even before its release.

An experience with unique charm

Once out, Ghostwire Tokyo received a score of 16/20 in our columns and a score of 75/100 on Metacritic. Among its qualities, we can praise its esoteric story which revolves around mourning, its reconstruction of Tokyo or its supernatural atmosphere inspired by Japanese folklore. Controller in hand, the title shines with its exploration and the verticality of its level design, its effective combat against a varied bestiary or its light-RPG dimension. Unfortunately, the experience is a little spoiled by its sometimes behind-the-scenes narrative, its ultimately not very diverse environments, its fairly short lifespan and at the same time the feeling of repetition which sets in at the right moment. Despite everything, there’s nothing to stop you from forming your own opinion by trying it “for free” if you are a PS+ subscriber.
