CEO Strauss Zelnick of the famous game Grand Theft Autoby Take Two (which owns Rockstar Games), claims that artificial intelligence (AI) will not make game development less expensive.
In an interview with CNBC, On among other things the use of AI, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take Two, says that AI will not change the way its developers produce games in the future. Mr. Zelnick pointed out that game developers have been using AI tools for some time now. Adopting this technology will not make it “cheaper, faster, better or easier to make good shots.”
“All of our tools help us become more efficient,” said Zelnick, whose comments were reported by MobileSyrup. What this means, however, is that our developers will be able to do fewer mundane tasks and focus on the truly creative tasks. »
AI: more efficient, but not necessarily more creative
In that same interview, when asked if AI would be involved in the creative aspects of development, Mr. Zelnick walked back his comments by stating that AI could not make creative decisions.
Publishers and developers are divided on how to approach the use of artificial intelligence. Ubisoft has been open to using AI not only for support tasks, but also for writing.
The case of Ubisoft and others
In 2023, Ubisoft launched Ghostwriter, a proprietary software that claims to be able to write conversation backgrounds (barks) in the style of the project’s writers. As a reminder, these are background lines of dialogue. These posts can be time consuming to write, but they are often how beginning writers gain experience and are still important in creating an engaging and creative world that players can immerse themselves in.
Smaller developers have also adopted AI, such as Curve Animation, the team behind the recent success on Steam, Liar’s Bar. All the characters in Liar’s Bar are interpreted by AI. This is a controversial choice, impacting both the voice actors and the players.
