nine months after their launch, free and no-installation games are bowing out

The Arcade section of the Microsoft Store, which brought together free games that can be run without installation, has just been scrapped by Microsoft.

Nine months. This is how long it took Microsoft to realize the dismal failure of the Arcade section, launched last February on the Microsoft Store. As a reminder, if you missed this episode (no one will blame you), the Microsoft application store had until yesterday, an Arcade section in which were offered free of charge, games of little interest requiring no installation . Unfortunately (or fortunately?) they will not last long.

Free games disappeared as quickly as they arrived

The Arcade tab of the Microsoft Store brought together some 70 games, playable directly from the application store. These were small “casual games”, mostly unknown to the general public, but which aped licenses well known to everyone. Among these, we remove, for example, a game reminiscent of Tetris, another paying homage to Candy Crush, and much more.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, the success of its Arcade section was obviously close enough to nothing for the company to make the wise decision to put an end to it. Although the idea of being able to kill time quickly by quickly playing games without having to install them was good, the quality of these was not enough to convince users. Without any further ado, Microsoft has in fact pushed the Arcade tab of the Microsoft Store to its grave. The Redmond firm had, a few days ago, begun to alert users by displaying a brief message indicating the disappearance of the section dedicated to them as of Thursday, November 14.

If this breaks your heart, rest assured. You can still find these fantastic games on the Microsoft Store. But before you can play them, you will need to download and install them on your PC. The function allowing you to play it “instantly” is disappearing for good.
