The Ryzen 7 9800X3D overheats to the point of burning a user's motherboard stock

An AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor overheats, this is what it results in: a burned motherboard and a processor as well, all because of an overvoltage.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, one of the most efficient gaming CPUs of the moment, which we praised a few days ago, can overheat. This overheating went so far as to burn part of the AM5 socket on the motherboard. A user on Reddit named TrumpPooPoosPants shared an image of his damaged CPU on an MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk motherboard, reporting that his computer refused to boot. He only had to disassemble his computer to notice that the pins of the stock had been burned by the overheating of the processor, which must have been quite intense. With this comes an error code “00” on the motherboard, a problem that has been mentioned by other users.

For the moment, however, there is nothing to say whether this error code is linked to the problem of processor overheating.

A material cause or a negligent user?

According to the information available, it seems that the motherboard could be responsible for this overheating, having potentially sent too much electrical voltage to the stock contacts, therefore causing the processor to overheat, to the point of burning it.

However, some Reddit users suspect that the processor may not have been installed correctly, with some pins appearing slightly bent and the socket damaged on one side. Although it is difficult to incorrectly install this type of processor, this hypothesis remains plausible.

An isolated incident for the moment

AMD has previously experienced similar incidents with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, another processor using 3D V-Cache technology, which suffered damage due to power surges on an Asus X670 motherboard. However, this problem was quickly corrected via BIOS updates, greatly reducing the risks for users.

In this case, the absence of other similar incidents suggests that this could be an isolated incident. However, it remains important for users to check the status of the pins and contacts before installing the processor, a card may arrive with a problem, or simply if you buy it used, it may have been damaged by the previous owner. Improper installation, even slight, can damage your equipment.
