It is with pleasure that we announce today the creation of Jean-Marc Lauzon scholarships at IRex. Every year, the Bourse d’excellence Jean-Marc Lauzon and the Jean-Marc Lauzon Perseverance Scholarship will be given to two students who are starting a master’s degree within IREx, at the University of Montreal.

These scholarships are made possible thanks to a generous donation from Jean-Marc Lauzon, a hydrogeology engineer by training. Mr. Lauzon has worked in the sectors of hydrogeology (the science of geology that deals with groundwater) and environmental sciences since the late 1980s. In 1996, he co-founded the engineering firm TechnoRem Inc. Throughout his career, he has been involved in the field of scientific research in different sectors of earth sciences.
Since his childhood, he has been fascinated by mathematics and physics, the origin of the creation of the Universe and the Earth, the evolution of life as well as by astronomy, which he considers to be the most beautiful of science. He always dreamed of integrating astronomy into his activities at work. He very often looks at the sky with his wife and three children, and likes to imagine visiting one of the stars at random and observing life on its planets.
“I cannot join the IRex physics program and start my life again as an astrophysicist, but I am taking this unique opportunity to join your group of pioneers in the search for extraterrestrial life in space, to attempt to make sense of what I observe every night, as well as to ask myself what makes the Universe, so large, exist (I’m so curious!),” he explains.
Thanks to these new scholarships, Mr. Lauzon will be able to share his passion for astrophysics, cosmology and earth sciences in general with professors, researchers and physics students at the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets. .
