This news, Dan Houser, the former co-director of Rockstar, did not see it coming. Donald Trump won the election, leading with a neck-and-neck vote count with Kamala Harris. The co-founder would never have imagined that GTA 6 could be released under a Trumpian presidency!

Violence, ok, but not in real life!

Dan Houser, the co-founder who left his own studio in 2020, spoke in 2018 at GQ (a British magazine) to talk about the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. During the interview, he spoke about his country's politics and said “grateful” not to release GTA 6 under Donald Trump’s presidency. Turnaround on November 6, 2024: the Republican candidate is about to begin his second term, since he received the majority of votes. So unless the next Grand Theft Auto is pushed back until 2029, the game will be released while the ex-businessman is in power. According to the former director of Rockstar, Donald Trump is blurring the lines of reality.

At the same level, progressivism and conservatism are very militant, and very angry. It's frightening, but also strange, and both trends occasionally covet the realm of the absurd. It's hard to satire for these reasons. Some things you see go way beyond satire. (GTA 6) would be obsolete in two minutes, everything changes so quickly. – And Houser chez GQ.

Politicized titles

The Rockstar team's political views are reflected in their titles. A good example is Red Dead Redemption 2, a cowboy game that is nonetheless feminist and representative of racial minorities. The Houser brothers accept historical misinterpretations:

Although it may be a fictional historical work, it is not historical content (…) women have started to challenge their place in society, and that makes for interesting characters. We didn't want to make it so that if he's black, then he has to talk like that (…) We try to feel how they are, as people.

In its deep identity, GTA is also political given that it is a parody criticism of American capitalist and consumer societywithout explicitly supporting Democratic causes. If the activities of GTA opuses are often marked by violence, Rockstar invites players to “fair play” and “respect” in its community rules.

While waiting to reveal more about the most anticipated game of 2025, Rockstar recently released a remaster de Red Dead Redemption sur PS5and a port of the second opus to PS5 is planned for next March.
