Samsung betrayed its update promise for its Galaxy Watches

While Samsung traditionally offers quarterly security patches for its smartwatches, most models haven’t been updated since last March.

While the update of Samsung watches to One UI 6 Watch – and therefore to Wear OS 5 – is still pending, it seems that the manufacturer is lagging behind, including on security patches.

Indeed, in an article posted online this Wednesday, the Dutch site Galaxy Club takes stock of the latest updates offered by Samsung on its Galaxy Watches under Wear OS.

Concretely, the latest security patches offered by the manufacturer for the Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic date back to March 1. For their part, the recent Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra are equipped with a software version dated June 1.

In short, if recent watches are entitled to a security patch dated five months ago, previous generation Galaxy Watches have a version dated eight months ago.

A promise of a “quarterly” update far from being kept

Where the problem lies is that Samsung promises, on its website, “ quarterly security updates », so every four months, for its entire range of connected watches under Wear OS.

On the same page, however, the firm indicates that “ OS updates may delay scheduled security updates “. So Samsung may be working hard on updating older models to One UI 6 Watch. It will undoubtedly be this update, expected at the end of the month, which will allow you to benefit from more recent security patches.

This could also be an opportunity for Samsung to update its Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, already based on One UI 6 Watch, to integrate the security patch in question.
