Apple finally accelerates the deployment of AI (but not for everyone)

In recent days, Apple has officially entered the race for Artificial Intelligence, with iOS 18.1 and its first AI-boosted functions. But these are just the beginnings of a smarter future for the iPhone.

Apple could (finally) accelerate the deployment of AI

Last Monday, Apple deployed the latest final versions of all of its systems, including iOS 18.1 with the first Apple Intelligence features. For two weeks, it has also offered the first beta of iOS 18.2.

And it seems that the final version of iOS 18.2 may arrive sooner than expected. In his newsletterMark Gurman indeed believes that iOS 18.2 operating system update, which includes major improvements to Apple Intelligence […] is likely to arrive earlier in December, I’m told. What time? The week of December 2, barring any unexpected delays.

According to the calendar of previous years, this release would take place earlier than previous versions. So iOS x.2 updates have typically been released in the second week of December, with iOS 17.2 launching on December 11 and iOS 16.2 launching on December 13.

But that’s not really surprising. Indeed, Apple – which is already late and which has not released the AI functions at the same time as the iPhone 16 range – certainly intends to work harder on the next batch of AI functions. As the end-of-year holidays approach, it’s also about not missing the strategic objective of Christmas!

What to expect from iOS 18.2?

For this version 2 (still reserved for the USA), Apple Intelligence will be enriched with several new features, in particular:

• Image Playground: the ability to generate images from a description, suggested concepts, or even a person from your photo library
• Image Wand to turn sketches / a blank space or a key phrase in a note, into full images directly in the Notes app
• Genmoji: the ability to create custom emojis based on prompts
• ChatGPT integration with Siri (with OpenAI GPT-4o and local processing)
• New features for writing tools: “Compose” and “Describe your change”
• Visual Intelligence for iPhone 16 users only (a feature that provides information about your surroundings through the Camera app)

Furthermore, Apple also confirmed the rollout of its AI to other countries in December. New Apple Intelligence features will be available in December, with additional capabilities rolling out in the coming months.

Europe – which remains deprived of Apple Intelligence for legal reasons – is also entitled to specially dedicated modifications. These concern the default applicationswith the insertion of additional sections in the Settings app > Apps (at the very bottom) > Default apps. There are settings for messaging, messaging, calling, call screening, browser applications, passwords and codes, and keyboard applications.

In the United States, it will be possible to choose the default application interface to choose your favorite emails, call filters, browser, passwords and keyboards. As for them, Users residing in the EU should have more options for choosing default apps (which are not native apps).

EU users can also remove more core apps like Messages, App Store, Safari, Camera, and Photos. This modification is an application of Article 6 paragraph 3 of the DMA. Indeed, firms recognized as gatekeepers should make it easy to uninstall applications or change default settings.

In iOS 17.4.1, it was possible to remove the Photos app from the home screen but not from the phone. The latter could always be found in the last screen, in the application library.

With iOS 18.2, it is possible to completely erase it from your iPhone! This should satisfy Margrethe Vestager who also judged that the changes made by Cupertino were not sufficient, and that it is not yet possible to uninstall certain native applications.
