Because of the leaks, the co-creator of the Grand Theft Auto franchise was considering postponing a global announcement, fortunately, he was not the only one to decide and his team managed to reason with him. This reminds us that, even if GTA 6 is planned for 2025, nothing is guaranteed, everything can change, we must in all cases be patient and understanding when faced with Rockstar’s decisions…
A software announced before its announcement
The most anticipated game on the planet, Grand Theft Auto 6, has been subject to leaks since its very first moments. It was on November 7, 2023 that Jason Shreier, journalist at Bloomberg, announced on X that “Rockstar plans to announce Grand Theft Auto 6 very soon, and will release a trailer in December”. Information that comes out one day before the official announcement by Sam Houser, the co-creator of the franchise. The latter, unhappy at not having been the first to convey the good news, strongly considered postponing the announcement of the release of the trailer for the title. An insider in this story explains: “I remember (Sam Houser) wanted to push back the November announcement by a week, just to annoy Scherier, but we talked him out of it.” (source : Dexerto). Indeed, the decision was not just the responsibility of the CEO, but of the entire team.
Culture du leak
Subsequently, the trailer in question itself leaked, prompting Rockstar to release it earlier than expected. That’s all fans have been treated to since: a single trailer. Certainly, this appetizer is tasty and rich, but it’s still been a year since players analyzed each pixel appearing in the video in detail. From then on, and even more than before, the studio is very attentive to its secret. However, the risk is everywhere: with the gargantuan number of people involved, it is impossible to monitor everything. We don’t know the exact figures, but in comparison, around 2000 people worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 and around a thousand on GTA 5. Result: people involved in the project disclose their status on networks like Linkedin, or describe a little too much their role in history…
Rockstar is obviously not the only one affected by the leaks. The very secret Nintendo saw its motion detection system discovered well before the announcement of Alarmo, its interactive alarm clock. Another topical example: the “Teraleak”, the huge leak of game source code and script documents from Game Freak. The problem is that this kind of information excites fans. As soon as they are published, they generate clicks, go viral and studios, no matter how big they are, can’t do much to prevent it. There’s no indication that a second trailer is planned for GTA 6 this year, but there’s nothing stopping you from hoping.
