The RTX 5090 would ultimately not cost much more than the RTX 4090

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 will be part of the launch range of next-generation RTX 50 “Blackwell” graphics cards which would likely be launched at CES 2025. A few configurations have been revealed and appear realistic. The RTX 5090 in particular looks very enticing compared to the RTX 4090 with 32GB of VRAM and over 21,000 CUDA cores, but these specs have also sparked speculation and rumors about a potential price hike, not without some exaggerations.

Rumors from earlier this week claimed that NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 would cost up to $2,500, while the RTX 5080 would cost over $1,000. These are just assumptions, and not very realistic. If none of the partners has yet received price information, manufacturing should begin soon.

Price-wise, it is clear that Nvidia is focusing on MSRP models, because this is the price at which its Founders Edition models will be marketed and the first estimates for third-party manufacturers must be based on the MSRP models.

According to a reliable source at a Taiwan-based factory that produces cooling equipment for Nvidia, we have learned that the manufacturer has at least 8 different coolers designed for its reference “FE” models. We can’t say for sure if these are finalized models or prototypes, but it gives us an idea of when the final lineup will be established.

Coming back to the prices, even Kopite7kimi, one of the most influential leakers in the field, indicates that the prices announced are completely false. He indicates that he does not believe that the price of the RTX 5090 will see a significant increase compared to the RTX 4090 which was priced at $1599, but which currently sells for over $1800 and which will soon be discontinued to make room for future models.

Third-party manufacturers are also trying, for their part, to liquidate their RTX 40 stocks, in order to leave room for new generations, presumably at the high end in the first place.

As a reminder, the last major price increase on an ultra-enthusiastic card like the “90” series was the RTX 3090 which sold for $1500 and the next “Ti” variant sold for $1999. The RTX 4090 was found to be 60-80% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, but its price increased by only $100 compared to the previous version.

So of course, the RTX 5090 will be more expensive, that’s undeniable. However, to announce $3,000 for this card, according to certain sources, is simply absurd.
