the original creator gives his opinion on the remake of his cult game

Masashi Tsuboyama, director of Silent Hill 2 original, is very excited about the Bloober Team remake and its new features.

Against all expectations, the remake of Silent Hill 2 would be a success. This is good news that comes right in time for the Halloween season. 23 years after the release of the original titlethe Polish Bloober Team (The Medium, Layers of Fear, Blair Witch) would therefore have accomplished the feat of updating the legendary Silent Hill 2and without betraying its unique essence.

Even the director of the 2001 game, Masashi Tsuboyama, seems excited to see the outcome. This one was in fact expressed on X/Twitter where he gave his opinion on the evolution of video games and the interest of remakes for titles belonging to another technological generation. In the case of Silent Hill 2 from Bloober Team, the renovation of certain systems and mechanics would indeed be relevant.

On the interest of the remake

Where remakes of cult games are often a source of disappointment, they can sometimes create pleasant surprises. With a true artistic vision, it is always possible to seize the opportunity to modernize a masterpiece to give it new meaning or new youth. It is, among other things, a way to perpetuate the game for future generations. At least that’s what Masashi Tsuboyama defends on X/Twitter:

« Games and technology are constantly evolving, leading to significant differences in constraints and levels of expression. This is a common problem in media arts in general, but it is not easy to maintain and appreciate the environment of the time. […] I think the value of a remake is that a new generation can play it. As a creator, it makes me very happy.«

One day it’s 2001… everything is fine…

Silent Hill 2 in third person

The technical reinvention of Silent Hill 2 would thus be a great success for Masashi Tsuboyama. And to prove it, he even pointed out the novelty of the remake which makes him the most enthusiastic:

« Changing the playable camera has a huge impact on many aspects of the game: combat, level design, art creation, etc. While it has a limited effect on the story, it fundamentally changes the gameplay experience. Honestly, I wasn’t happy with the playable camera 23 years ago. […] But that was the limit at the time. The third-person view definitely adds to the realism. In other words, it makes me want to play this more immersive Silent Hill 2 remake even more!«

…and bam! 2024

Over the past few months (and even years), Bloober Team has struggled to defend its cause and its work. Some fans were hopelessly suspicious of adaptation choice which the studio seemed to want to take for this remake – and which got them into some trouble with Konami, apparently. But to fight without danger, we triumph without glory.

In the end, the positive reviews from the press and Tsuboyama’s infectious enthusiasm prove the developers’ persistence. If we are still waiting for the most important verdict on the game (that of the players), Bloober Team must already be relieved to finally find some gracious praise as a reward for his audacity.
