New album “The Godfather”: “The situation of young people is serious” – Sans Pression

As he presents his eighth albumThe Godfatherveteran rapper Sans Pression says he is alarmed by the increase in the rate of armed violence among teenagers in the province.

“The situation of young people is serious. I grew up on the streets and it has never been so worrying. It’s alarming,” says Sans Pression, himself the father of three children aged 12, 18 and 22. “I have friends from and the United States who write to me to tell me: what is happening with you? Have you gone crazy? », he laments in an interview with The Journal.

He does not fail to address this concern out loud on his most recent project, The Godfatherpublished on October 4, his 48th birthday. “It’s not the parents who are supposed to bury the children,” he exclaims in particular on the song Little people.

“I know that I will not change the world, but I find it important to do my part and try to guide young people,” mentions SP, who grew up in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Sherbrooke and Montreal, before seeing his career took off in 1999 with the album 514-50 In my network.

“Rap has lost its message”

Sans Pression admits, there have been many questions since his last project, in 2018. He wondered if his conscious rap and his social critiques still had their place.

“I think rap has lost its message. It seems that it no longer wakes up the masses, but that it puts them to sleep,” mentions the man who was greatly inspired by MCs Solaar and Dubmatique when he was younger.

His meetings and exchanges with his admirers, however, remind him that he is not an outdated rapper.

“Fans always take the time to thank me and often tell me that my music has helped them in difficult times,” notes Kamenga Mbikay, his real name. “I know conscious rap isn’t necessarily what’s in, but it still has its place. People need to hear positivity and hope. »

The Godfather, Sans Pression’s eighth album, is available on all platforms since October 4.
