Microsoft stops production of the HoloLens 2

Microsoft has announced that it is interrupting production of the HoloLens 2, its mixed reality headset, which has been on the market since 2019. Support will be provided until the end of 2027.

This decision comes as a surprise to many in the industry, especially given the recent launch of Apple’s Vision Pro. Microsoft, however, insists that it will continue to invest in mixed reality technology, but in a different way. Rather than developing hardware, the company will target software solutions and collaboration with other firms in the sector, reports The Register.

The HoloLens 2, which promised to revolutionize the way we work and learn, was never a huge success. Although the headset is technically impressive, its high price and limited applications have discouraged many potential customers.

The future of mixed reality

Following the discontinuation of the HoloLens 2, the future of mixed reality seems uncertain. Even if Microsoft continues to invest in technology, it remains to be seen whether the company will ever launch a hardware product again. It seems that it will indeed focus on the development of software solutions capable of running on existing hardware, such as smartphones and virtual reality headsets.

What does this mean for existing users?

Existing HoloLens 2 users will still be able to use it until the end of 2027. Microsoft guarantees security updates and support until this date. Subsequently, users will be abandoned to their fate.
