Officially available in France since June, Gemini is gradually pushing Google Assistant towards release. A trend that is confirmed with Gemini Live, a function presented during the Made By Google conference which allows you to chat naturally with AI. First presented as a new feature intended for Gemini Advanced subscribers, Gemini Live has become free on Android and its deployment is accelerating.
This AI-powered assistant, an evolved version of Google Assistant, no longer requires a subscription to Google Advanced (21.99 euros/month) to function. From today, it is available in French!
How do I access Gemini Live on my smartphone?
Until now, Google offered Gemini in English and you had to go through some manipulation to benefit from it in France. The Mountain View company announces the extension of Gemini Live to Android devices in more than 40 languages. French is part of the list, allowing you to discover and chat with the American giant’s conversational AI.
Google specifies that Gemini Live can converse in two different languages on the same device. In the future, the firm plans to expand support to more languages.
To set your preferred languages, simply open the Google app on your phone or tablet.
At the top, you must press your profile photo or your initial then Settings Then Assistant Google and finally LANGUAGES. In addition to French, you can add a second language like English.
Note that this only concerns the Google Assistant and has no influence on the language of your device.
Then you will see a new icon appear in the Gemini app. It refers to Live mode and a short presentation details how it works. You can even choose from 10 distinct voices:
- Nova: “calm” and medium voice
- Vega: “bright” and higher voice
- Ursa: “engaged” and medium voice
- Pegasus: “engaged” and deeper voice
- Eclipse: “energetic” and medium voice
- Capella: British accent, higher voice
- Dipper: “engaged” and deeper voice
- Orbit: “energetic” and deeper voice
- Orion: “bright” and deeper voice

Google responds to OpenAI and Microsoft
The accelerated rollout of Gemini Live to all users comes after recent announcements from OpenAI and Microsoft. The father of ChatGPT recently launched advanced voice mode on chatbot, adding new voices. For its part, Microsoft has just unveiled Copilot Voice to allow natural voice interaction with its assistant. The Redmond firm also presented Vision, a Copilot function capable of seeing everything you see and which can tell you about it in real time.
