The Saint-Benoît astronomy club, chaired since 2022 by Stéphanie Le Tarnec, happily blew out thirty candles, or rather thirty stars.
For the occasion, a presentation retraced the life of the club since its creation in 1994 by Richard Leroux. In 2011, the club participated for the first time in the national event Nights of the Stars. The last edition, on August 10, attracted more than 400 people to La Varenne.
Observation of the Sun on October 5
In 2023, the club hosted another iconic event, Winter Star Night. In 2012, the astronomy club acquired a Coronado, equipment specially designed for observing the Sun, a telescope with an H-alpha filter which allows astronomy to be carried out in broad daylight. Since then, observations of the Sun have been organized every year in October as part of the Science Festival. This year, the meeting is set for Saturday October 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Place du Marché. The opportunity to observe spots and other solar protuberances for free with various instruments.
Another significant activity, in 2021, a project carried out with the assistance of the City’s technical services resulted in the creation in the Jardin d’Ormesson in Vallée-Mouton of an analemmatic sundial which operates with the shadow of a person .
Since this year, the club has been providing astronomy training for newcomers. No level in astronomy or equipment is required, the club provides members with LX200, 115/900, Coronado, solarscope and other Dobsonians. The bimonthly meetings are devoted to a presentation by one of the members, to the presentation of astronomical news and ephemeris for the following month, to the computer processing of photographs captured during observations or, when time permits, to outdoor observations. . The association also offers an annual outing with visits to observatories, museums or the Rochechouart astrobleme (a crater caused by the impact of a meteorite).
