JVMAG-Sony says goodbye to the Blu-Ray and Minidiscs, the end of an era

On January 23, Sony Storage Media Solutions and Sony Marketing officially announced the cessation of the production of Blu-ray, Minidiscs, MD Data for registration, and mini-DV cassettes from February 2025. This decision marked the end of an era for these storage formats, long supported by Sony. You will find the official announcement ici.

Bad profitability, too impressive streaming

The decision is explained by the development of video streaming services and cloud storage. What make these physical formats less interesting. Already last July, Sony had indicated its intention to gradually reduce the production of Blu-ray records, without however announcing a precise date. From now on, the final judgment is fixed.

A striking heritage

Sony played a key role in the popularity of Blu-ray, in particular by integrating them into PlayStation 3 in 2006, positioned as an affordable solution to read these discs. This strategy has helped to democratize the format. However, with the decision to stop their production, the question arises: are we dawn of a complete switch to digital media and dematerialized games?

“We thank you for your loyalty to Sony products. We will put an end to the production of all the models of Blu-ray, Minidiscs for recording, MD data for recording and MINIDV cassettes from February 2025. There will be no successor models. We want to express our sincere gratitude to our many customers for their loyalty to date. ”

What is du futur?

For the moment, there is no question of abandoning physical support for video games or films. Indeed, Sony is not the only manufacturer of this support in the world. The fact remains that the trend is gradually written in the whole industry.
