Communications on our phones are undergoing a major upheaval with the arrival of RCS (Rich Communication Services). Considered the replacement for old SMS and MMS, RCS could well change the way we send messages. This international protocol offers a richer experience, similar to that of WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. For Android users, it's a bit like iMessage for Apple – welcome to the next generation of mobile communication!

Android is ready, but what about Apple?

RCS compatibility depends on the operating system and phone model. On Androidalmost any device can take advantage of RCS through the Messages app, thanks in part to Google's efforts. However, some old models are not yet there. To find out if your phone is compatible, simply take a look at your usual messaging app. As Num notes: “Some relatively old phone models are not compatible with RCS”.

At Appleit's not that simple. Even if iOS 18 integrates this standard, each operator must adjust their network settings for it to work.

French operators are getting started… slowly

The adoption of RCS by French operators is progressing at its own pace. SFR paved the way with the arrival of iOS 18 in July 2024thus becoming the first to offer this technology in France. SFR proudly states: “SFR was the first operator to offer RCS in France”. Afterwards, Free followed suit with the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024. For his part, Bouygues Telecom activated this service as of December 12, 2024indicating that “this service has been active at Bouygues since December 12, on all compatible terminals (Apple and Android)”. As for we are still waiting for precise news on their planned deployment for 2025.

How to activate RCS on your phone?

To take full advantage of RCS features, you need to know how to activate it according to your device. On a Samsung, open Messages, click “More options”, then go to “Settings” and finally “Chat settings” to enable/disable RCS messaging under “Chat features”. With Google Messages, click your profile picture, go to “Messages app settings,” then turn on RCS Chats under “RCS Chat.”

For those who have an Apple device, head to the settings: tap “Messages” then select “RCS Service” to activate or deactivate.

Will SMS/MMS disappear?

Even if RCS considerably enriches our exchanges compared to traditional SMS/MMS, the latter will not disappear immediately. They will continue to exist alongside the new protocol to ensure a smooth transition between old and new technologies.

The continued development of Rich Communication Services marks an important turning point in our mobile communications. By offering more interactive options while remaining compatible with current systems, this technology promises to improve the way we communicate every day. Expect to see more operators adopting this standard soon – making these features accessible to even more people!
