This is something new for foreign residents living in Moutier: from this year, respectively since June, they will be able to express themselves at the ballot box during votes and elections. This situation is made possible by the transfer of the city to the canton of Jura and the fact that Jura law grants this right, unlike Bernese law.
In total, according to estimates, between 500 and 1,000 additional people will be able to go to the polls, explains Valentin Zuber. The municipal councilor in charge of Jura affairs that this situation represents a real challenge for the Provost administration. “We have to do it on a case-by-case basis to determine if people are voters,” he explains.
A test to avoid errors
The Municipality plans to “train” with a view to organizing the first real vote with this enlarged electoral body. A test will be carried out again this winter. “We are recording a vote which will not actually take place, that is to say there will be no transmission of ballots to the population,” explains Valentin Zuber. This general rehearsal should make it possible to avoid blunders before the first real election in June.
