The town of Allons purchased a car-sharing vehicle to make traveling around the town easier. An ecological and economic asset for citizens.

Mobility in rural communities is one of the most important issues in Allons, near Saint-André-les-Alpes. So, the town hall decided to opt for car sharing to try to make travel easier.

In Allons, in winter, there are only 120 inhabitants who keep the village going. Here, no buses run except for school buses, while the train passes five kilometers away. So to allow everyone to get around, the village has focused on car sharing.

It is therefore an electric Peugeot 208 which was acquired by the municipality for a cost of around 30,000 euros, 80% financed by the State thanks to the green mobility fund as part of the “village of the future” program and thanks at the Verdon regional natural park. Allons therefore had to pay 20% of the amount for this vehicle.

“For as many people as possible”

The municipality, legally the owner of the vehicle, will carry out its maintenance but motorists resident or not in the municipality can use it. To do this, simply make an online reservation on the manager's website in order to be able to rent the vehicle for different slots. “The objective being that it is used for as many people as possible,” notes Mayor Christophe Iacobbi.

“We wanted three times of use. The price is 4 euros for two hours, 7.50 euros for the morning and 10 euros for the day. So I think the calculation is quick when we see the cost of the 'energy, maintenance…', he continues.

Once the slot has been chosen, a unique code is sent to the user who comes to collect the vehicle at the time of reservation. Once use is finished, all you have to do is place it back in its dedicated parking space.

An ecological and economic asset

In addition to the cost of purchasing the car, the municipality must also pay 3,500 euros per year to the managing company for operation. Despite everything, this vehicle remains a key asset, both ecological and economical.

“It is a vehicle which has little impact on the environment and we can consider that households, which today have two vehicles, will perhaps part with one,” continues Christophe Iacobbi to BFM DICI.

And added: “this is the case in my family. We ask ourselves the question because we realize that we use the second vehicle very little, so if there is another one available It makes you think.”

This good ecological and economical idea is currently the first in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department.
