2025 has arrived, the champagne (and the flu…) has flowed freely over a relatively calm year on the material side, the usual routine. But this year, if we are to believe the predictions of wizard Mark Gurman, hang on, there will be sport!
Roundabout
To begin with, there is the usual cycle (no, not that of life, just Simba): technical updates. And on this point, the year 2025 will be served: between iPads, portable Macs and fixed versions, there is plenty to do!
The entry-level iPad, if it should keep its current design, will move like its mini cousin to the A17 Pro, with 8 GB of RAM. It is purely logical to be able to easily accommodate Apple Intelligence, so there is little chance of failing on this one. The iPad Air, for its part, should upgrade to the M4. Like the iPad Pro? Yes, like him, which should allow him to catch up with the power of his expensive lineage brother, but no worries: the Pro will also be entitled to his change, but towards the end of the year, with the arrival of the M5 version.
The MacBook Air, as repeatedly announced, should receive its update at the very beginning of the year, production having already started. It will thus join the family of products using the M4, with the same design as currently. If the M3 should disappear due to some difficulties with the production of the SoC, it is the M2 which should remain present to serve as an entry level. So of course it seems petty, but at the same time the M2 version is far from being up to par for the main uses of this ultra-portable machine.
Big Generator
Concerning the MacBook Pro, the arrival of the M5 is expected towards the end of the year. While the design should remain the same, it appears to be the last iteration before a more substantial renewal. For the Mac Studio, no change in design for such a recent machine, but a move to the M4 Max and M4 Ultra, just to put a little margin between it and the Mac mini, which is carving out serious challenges for the current Mac Studio with its “small” M2 Max.
And the Mac Pro in all this? Don’t panic, he should also be entitled to his update. Although little has filtered out, we still have one detail: it should contain a very high-end chip, nicknamed “Hidra” internally. Enough to give it a strong argument against its little brother Mac Studio? We’ll see, with a likely release towards the end of the year.
Mirror to the Sky
Apple Watches? They are doing well, thank you for them. If few exterior changes are expected for the Watch Series 11 and the Ultra 3, the interior should evolve to integrate new functions: if both should see the arrival of a relatively primitive blood pressure sensor in the sense that it will only To indicate a possible high pressure, Ultra should add 5G connection to the list, as well as satellite, thanks to the partner Globalstar which already works on iPhones.
The Apple Watch SE, for its part, should receive a new design, undoubtedly to be closer to more recent generations.
But where has the Apple Watch Ultra 3 gone?
Changes
A big part of the changes will come from the iPhone range. If for more than 5 years the design has remained almost the same, according to Gurman things should change this year. It is very likely that Apple will tend towards ever finer or even non-existent edges, and a few small modifications should even affect the architecture of the range.
Of course, many articles have already talked about it, the new kid in the range will be the iPhone 17 Air: very thin, the thinnest that the brand has made since the iPhone existed, it will have to make some compromises for that. If the autonomy is not known (we frankly hope that it remains correct), it will be based on the A19, with logically 8 GB of RAM. The camera, on the other hand, will pose more limitations: it should return to the simple rear lens, something which has not been seen for a very long time in the range outside of the iPhone SE.
iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air… What will the 2025 iPhone range look like?
Let’s talk about the iPhone SE! Since it has not been updated, this year is its own: it should move to the format of current iPhones, and gain Face ID, and an engine powerful enough to run Apple Intelligence. The only downside is that these new capacities should be accompanied by a slight increase in the price. But Apple has a… solution, so to speak: the current iPhone SE should remain in the range for a little longer, except of course in the European Union, where it is persona non grata because of its Lightning port. At the same time, he would no longer be of much interest given his age…
As for the core range and the Pro range, a brand new design should appear, even if nothing more has filtered out at the moment. Concerning the home modem, as well as the wi-fi/bluetooth chip, both should debut in the iPhone 17 Air as well as in the new iPhone SE, before becoming widespread across the entire range in 2026.
Shoot High, Aim Low
The other big piece of this year will concern the home: if the highly anticipated HomeHub (?) will be there in 2025, its arrival should happen in two stages. First of all, it should be presented in March, but without necessarily being available from that date. It will only be a little later, probably sometime in September, that this big new feature should finally be on the Apple Store.
As a reminder of its main characteristics, it should consist of a seven-inch, square screen, and allow you to control the entire connected home, download additional apps, but also Face Time conversations. It should be possible to either place it on a table or hang it on the wall.
Why wait so long between presentation and availability? Quite simply because this new device will be very linked to the new Apple Intelligence functions activated not only with iOS 18.4, but especially iOS 19, even if its system would be brand new, responding to the little name of Pebble internally.
Final Eyes
If this HomeHub shows the new path desired by Apple regarding home automation, it should hopefully be joined in 2026 by new accessories for the home, including an indoor camera, as well as a connected doorbell that works in tandem with Face ID.
But Cupertino will not forget its current products, which should undergo a big update in the form of a renewal of the HomePod mini and the Apple TV.
To finish on the accessories, the AirTag will indeed have its update, production has even already started.
Owner of a Lonely Heart
This year’s lost child, however, could well be the Vision Pro: if a new version of the augmented reality headset is planned for 2026, it should have a strongly revised design, to try to turn the tide and give it more echo in the hearts of users.
And to touch more hearts, its accessible little brother has priority, and should appear before the new iteration of the Vision Pro.
In the meantime, Apple is allowing itself many fantasies internally, such as trying a polished version of Meta’s Ray-Bans, or even cameras integrated into AirPods. AirPods which, already, should integrate new heart rate sensors this year, among other health elements.
Perpetual Change
If the year 2024 was relatively calm in terms of new hardware, we see that the year 2025 changes a notch, and should shake things up in all ranges. With so many new features, the news should be busy, to the delight of users!
- Dis Siri, mets-moi Big Generator.
- Sorry, Greg, HomeKit doesn’t support nuclear power plants yet.
- Pity…
