Chromecast with Google gets its first update of 2025, but there’s a catch

Google is starting the year 2025 with a new update for its Chromecast with Google , thus continuing the sustained pace of updates observed in 2024. This first update, although expected, does not yet bring the transition to Android 14.

The Chromecast with Google TV has just received a new update, and it is the first of 2025. Version STTL.241013.003, which succeeds STTL.240812.006.N1, mainly introduces Android security patches from November 2024, an improvement compared to the September level. However, the system remains under Android 12, further delaying the arrival of the new promised features. We could have hoped to see Google deploy Android 14, the most recent version of the OS on TV, but this is ultimately not the case.

This update, with a size of 72.25 MBis larger than the previous one from November which only weighed 59.48 MB. According to the official change log, it essentially brings “ bug fixes and performance improvements », without further details.

Chromecast with Google TV is often updated

The year 2024 was particularly active in terms of updates for Chromecast with Google TV, with eight deployments spread over the year (February, March, April, May, August, September, October and November), compared to only six in 2023. This rate clearly shows Google’s commitment to the maintenance of its streaming device.

Users are still eagerly awaiting the rollout of Android 14, which must in particular introduce the function “ Home runtime “. This major update will allow Chromecast with Google TV to serve as a hub for Matter-compatible connected devices, considerably enriching its home automation functionalities.

To install this new update, users can go to the settings of their Chromecast with Google TV, following the path: Settings > System > About > System update.

This first update of 2025 suggests that Google is maintaining its commitment to the Chromecast platform, even if certain major developments, such as the transition to Android 14, are still awaited.
