More than half of French people suffer from various pains, among them ten million people are affected by osteoarthritis, according to the Toluna Interactive survey for RTL. These are pains in the joints due to wear and tear of the cartilages, which often come with age but not only that. To combat pain, there are obviously anti-inflammatories or paracetamol. but also botox. Studies were carried out at the Cochin hospital in Paris.
Behind his desk, dressed in a white coat, Professor François Rannou, head of the rehabilitation department, studies the results of one of his teams’ latest clinical trials: treat osteoarthritis of the thumb using botox or botulinum toxin injections. “The pain in osteoarthritis is nerves growing into the cartilage. Botulinum toxin helps reduce pain by shaving the nerve endings at the joint,” he explains.
Usually, osteoarthritis is treated with corticosteroid injection but botulinum toxin is much more effective. “This technique can provide relief to patients between nine and twelve months. It is much more than a simple corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid,” continues Professor Rannou. We must now wait for validation from the health authorities to use this treatment.
“It’s a very common disease. People can no longer use their hands or knees. It’s not because we don’t die from it that we shouldn’t take care of it,” insists François Rannou. In France, ten million people suffer from osteoarthritis.
