premium smartphone designed with Hasseblad with three 50 Mpx sensors

New smartphone premium chez OnePlus. The brand unveils the OnePlus 13a terminal with a very muscular technical sheet – especially in photos – but at price plus content than its direct rivals. A more affordable “R” model is also making its debut. Back to their characteristics.

Design: the OnePlus 13, a very premium

Less than a year after the OnePlus 12, the Chinese brand (member of the sprawling BBK Communications group and owned by Oppo) formalizes the arrival of the OnePlus13 (and the OnePlus 13R) on European soil.

In terms of design, the OnePlus 13 resembles its predecessor, with a off-center circular photo module. The back has a finish in leatherette. The front is marked by the (very) large screen AMOLED of 6.82 inches (3168 x 1440 px), edges slightly curved (2.5D) and adaptive refresh (1-120 Hz). The physical switch is still present on the left edge.

Under the hood, we find a chip Snapdragon 8 Elite resolutely premiumcoupled with 12 or 16 Go of RAM. The capacity of the carbon-silicon battery rises to 6000 mAhsorry. Without forgetting the recharge 100W (wired) or 50W (wireless), with a recharge of 50% in 13 minutes and 100% in 36 minutes, indicates OnePlus.

Photo side: a trio of 50 Mpx sensors

The back module of the OnePlus 13 is designed in partnership with Hasselblad. The result: better color reproduction. It also stands out by integrating 3 50 Mpx sensors. Either a selling point well studied. However, the “secondary” sensors are nowhere near as large as the main sensor…

On the back of the smartphone, we discover:

  • A Sony LYT-808 main sensor 50 Mpx type 1/1.43 inchwhose photosites measure 1.12 µm, topped by an equivalent stabilized optic 23 mm and opening to f/1,6.
  • A Sony LYT-600 sensor 50 Mpx type 1/1.95 inch (photosites of 0.8 µm), associated with an equivalent telephoto lens 73 mm (x3 zoom) and opening to f/2,6.
  • A Samsung Isocell JN5 sensor 50 Mpx type 1/2.75 inchcoupled with a 15mm equivalent UGA lens and aperture at f/2.

Several things are worth noting here. On the one hand, the OnePlus 13 retains the Sony LYT-808 sensor from its predecessor. This sensor, type 1/43 inchis not the largest on the market, but it relies on technology « Exmor T for mobile »for a wider dynamic range and better reproduction of details. As usual, the sensor relies on the pixel binning : 4 pixels are (virtually) combined into one for images of 12,5 Mpx. The objective always opens to f/1,6.

On the telephoto side, the focal length remains at 70 mmbut OnePlus now relies on a system of “triprism” (which also recalls the “tetraprism” of the most popular iPhones premium). It is accompanied by a Sony sensor of 50 Mpx of type 1/1.95 inch (compared to 64 Mpx and 1/2.43 inch on its predecessor). The opening remains f/2,6.

Finally, l’ultra grand-angle seems a little behind, since it relies on a small sensor 1/2.75 inch of 50 Mpx. It is therefore to be feared that its performance in low light will be lower. We will nevertheless note the openness to f/2 (compared to f/2.2 on the OnePlus 12).

Hasselblad portrait mode and 8K video

OnePlus once again highlights its « mode portrait Hasselblad ». Thus, the focal length used and the rendering of the bokeh must recall the objectives Hasselblad XCD 3,5/30 (zoom x1), XCD 2.8/65 (zoom x2) and XCD 2,5/90V (x3 zoom). Enough to capture “sensational studio quality portraits”, indicates the brand.

At the same time, the smartphone is banking on its new algorithm « Dual Exposure ». The latter aims to revolutionize burst photography by merging 2 photos captured at different exposure values, for better reproduction of shadows and highlights. And, for an extra dose of responsiveness, the mode Action must allow images to be captured 30 or 60 i/s.

The terminal also takes over the « Master Mode ». More complete than the “Pro” mode of its competitors, it should allow you to adjust numerous shooting parameters: colorimetry, saturation, sharpness, contrasts, vignetting, etc.

Finally, in video, the OnePlus 13 films up to 8K 30 fps and in 4K at 60 fps. Several slow motion modes are offered in Full HDwith a maximum cadence at 480 fps. The capture in Dolby Vision 4K is always there.

OnePlus 13R: the return of flagship killer

At the same time, the brand also offers its OnePlus 13R. Thanks to judicious concessionsits technical sheet remains very premium…but its price is more content. The terminal benefits from a from OLEDs plane of 6.78 inchesfrom a two in worse food and of straight edges which are reminiscent of certain models from Samsung… or Apple. It benefits from a chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – or the star chip of 2024, accompanied by 12 GB of RAM. The battery displays 6000 mAhwith refill 80W.

On the photo side, it stands out from its big brother by opting for a main sensor LYT-700 type 1/1.56 inch of 50 Mpx. The ultra-wide-angle must be satisfied with a sensor of 8 Mpx only. Finally, the scope of telephoto lens East more reduced (47 mm), but the sensor is identical (Isocell JN5type 1/2.75 inch, 50 Mpx).

Price and availability of OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R

The OnePlus 13 is available in two versions. The 1st integrates 12 Go to RAM et 256 Go de stockage : it is offered at €1029. The 2nd includes 16 Go to RAM et 512 Go de stockage and is sold for €1079.

For his part, the OnePlus 13R is available in pre-order in a single version (12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage), and is priced at a rather low price of €769.

Our first opinion

With their very muscular technical sheetthese two new OnePlus smartphones have plenty to seduce the most tech-savvy. Like last year, we really appreciate their high-performance Snapdragon chip, coupled with a large amount of RAM, a very large battery and recharging in the blink of an eye.

On the photo side, the OnePlus 13 stands out thanks to its main sensor Sony LYT-808 and his Promising “triprism” telephoto lens. For its part, the OnePlus 13R should a priori offer a excellent value for moneywith a photo section also very neat.

OnePlus thus starts the year 2025 on the hats of wheel – even if these two ambitious smartphones will have to face very stiff competition.
